IAPP-Project-Map2The Government of Bangladesh (GoB) continues to be committed to food security through increased production in the sprit of the 1996 World Food Summit declaration: “Access by all people at all times to the food needed for an active & healthy life”. It has been reflected in major policy document of the Government. The Bangladesh Government recently has made Country Investment Plan (CIP) in June 2011, wherein the food availability issue received the highest priority. The CIP includes country led planning, fund mobilization and alignment tool, in support of increased and effective public investment in agriculture, food security and nutrition.

Agriculture in Bangladesh is extremely important due to its role in food security, employment and livelihood. While the country has made impressive achievements over the last 40 years (notably, it has tripled its rice production),but still a substantial proportion of rural households continue to experience chronic as well as transitory food insecurity, women are more in this category than men.

The major livelihood strategy in rural Bangladesh is subsistence agriculture either through agriculture production activities, agriculture labor or both. The country is very prone to hazards, and climate change has already caught national and international attention. Cyclones, tidal surges, tornadoes are now more often and droughts in certain areas are common. The geographical location and geo-morphological conditions of Bangladesh has made the country one of the most vulnerable ones to climate change.
